Redmond Varsity Mustangs built a 7-run lead in the first inning and then held off Bothell Varsity Cougars’ charge for an 8-6 victory on Friday.
The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after #6 Chase Lawson doubled, scoring one run, #15 Cavin Bowmer drew a walk, scoring one run, #3 Hiroshi Johnson drew a walk, scoring one run, #5 Leo Ciuca drew a walk, scoring one run, #11 Aidan Kim singled, scoring two runs, and #13 Isaiah McMahan singled, scoring one run.
Lawson earned the win for the Mustangs. The starter surrendered two hits and two runs (zero earned) over four and one-third innings, striking out four and walking three. #1 Kotaro Ishiyama came in the 4th inning and pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing 2 hits and 1 run. #2 Jay Heath tossed one inning of shutout ball for Redmond Varsity Mustangs in relief. The pitcher allowed one hit, striking out two and walking one. #12 Lance Burt gave up 2 hits and 3 runs over two-thirds of an inning striking out two and walking three. Bowmer collected the save by striking out the last Cougar to end the game.
McMahan and Kim were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for the Mustangs while hitting back-to-back. Kim and Johnson each drove in two runs for the Mustangs. #9 Brandon Dayberry stole two bases while hitting a single in the game. The Mustangs had a strong eye at the plate, amassing six walks for the game.
The Mustangs’ next game is at home on Monday against the Sammamish Redhawks.
