The Redmond High School baseball program has been fortunate to have strong catchers behind the plate. In my 16 years as coach, we have had a number of two-year and three-year starters.
Hunter Petit continued and strengthened that tradition as he was poised to be a three-year starter in 2020, anchoring the catcher spot since his Sophomore year.
Hunter is exactly what you want in a catcher: a true leader on the field. He works well with his pitchers and constantly communicates with his defense. He is an intimidating presence with a rocket for an arm. With Hunter as our catcher, opposing teams often just stopped trying to steal bases. They knew it was likely to be a losing proposition.
Beyond his physical ability, I will miss Hunter’s outstanding character. He is the ultimate “yes, coach” player, meaning he doesn’t make excuses and isn’t afraid to be coached hard. Hunter is a tireless worker, and he is incredibly respectful.
Hunter will play baseball at Whitman College next year. His leadership and character will be greatly missed here at Redmond.
